Energy demand is expected to rise with increasing world population and the rapid industrialisation of
many developing countries. Power generation is the single largest contributor of CO2 emissions, which
is considered as the major greenhouse gas emission. Post-combustion CO2 capture for coal fired power
plants is attracting more attention as a result of the large amounts of existing coal fired power plants
and no significant changes to equipment configurations required. For the efficient design and operation
of a post-combustion CO2 capture plant, process optimisation is required. Process optimisation requires
reliable and efficient process models. This talk presents some recent research results on post-combustion
CO2 capture modelling modelling, control, optimisation, and monitoring from an EU funded research
project involving the collaboration of European and Chinese researchers. A review of various approaches
for carbon capture is given. Data driven modelling through bootstrap aggregated neural networks and
bootstrap aggregated extreme learning machines is used for modelling CO2 capture rate and CO2 capture
level. Bootstrap aggregated neural networks have enhanced model generalisation capability and can also
provide model prediction confidence bounds. Model predictive control of carbon capture process is presented.
主讲人简介:
Dr Jie Zhang received his PhD in Control Engineering from City University, London, in 1991. He has been
with the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials, Newcastle University, UK, since 1991
and is currently a Senior Lecturer and Degree Programme Director for MSc in Applied Process Control.
His research interests are in the general areas of process system engineering including process modelling,
batch process control, process monitoring, and computational intelligence. He has published over 270
papers in international journals, books, and conference proceedings (H-index of 26 based on Web of
Science). He has supervised over 20 PhD students and 100 Master students. He is on the Editorial
Boards of a number of journals including Neurocomputing published by Elsevier and Control Engineering
of China. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.
